Microsoft invented a technology called Smart Tags. Smart Tags allow text to be marked up with actions, such as hyperlinks, when the text is displayed. They planned to introduce the technology with Windows XP. However, since public opinion was strongly against it, Microsoft decided to de-emphasize it. You can still create and use Smart Tags, but they're not prominent in Windows XP.
