In 1995 Allaire launched the ColdFusion Web Application Server. Since that
launch, java has become an important language for the web, and Allaire has
moved right along to combine the power of java with ColdFusion.
On June 15, 1999, Allaire purchased JRun, giving them a powerful java server
that currently supports java servlets and Enterprise JavaBeans.
Allaire has a technology road map that will allow your CFML pages to execute
directly on the next generation application server technology - a java engine
code named Pharaoh.
Right now you can develop applications in java and run them with your JRun
engine, and develop ColdFusion applications in CFML and run them on the
ColdFusion Web Application Server. But how do you use ColdFusion and java
to-gether?
Jeremy Allaire, in his IMHO, "Allaire ColdFusion, Java and JRun" (CFDJ, Vol.
1, issue 4), said that "ColdFusion and ... (more)
Microsoft invented a technology called Smart Tags. Smart Tags allow text to
be marked up with actions, such as hyperlinks, when the text is displayed.
They planned to introduce the technology with Windows XP. However, since
public opinion was strongly against it, Microsoft decided to de-emphasize it.
You can still create and use Smart Tags, but they're not prominent in Windows
XP.
This article provides an overview of the technology and then shows how you
can use ColdFusion to implement a simple version of Smart Tags. You can
download the custom tag, cf_smarttag, from the CFDJ Web... (more)
Saving development costs by reusing code has been a goal of the computing
industry for a long time. With a little forethought you can save time and
money developing Web systems using ColdFusion by encapsulating functionality
in custom tags.
This article describes how to nest custom tags (a working knowledge of these
tags is assumed. If you need more information on paired custom tags, see
Charles Arehart's article in CFDJ, Vol. 3, issue 1). Because of the frequent
references to listings later on, I suggest you download them now from
www.sys-con.com/coldfusion/sourcec.cfm.

This article describes Allaire's technology roadmap. Allaire started off with
a single product, the ColdFusion Web application server. Now they have many
products, and there's an increasingly strong relationship between them.
Allaire is using a range of code names to refer to its products, and it can
be difficult to remember which products are which and which code names refer
to which releases.
In this article you'll learn about the products and their code names, how the
products relate, and the features Allaire is promising in new versions. With
this information you'll be armed... (more)
Picture yourself in a hotel lobby in Washington, DC, clutching a laptop bag
and a suitcase, surrounded by about a hundred other people with similar
luggage and appearance. You've just checked in, and you're flipping through
the conference guide to get your bearings and making last-minute changes to
your session choices.
It's a vibrant atmosphere. Upstairs, the exhibition area is filled with
people crowding around demonstration stands, and every tee shirt seems to
have a high-tech message.
The Second Allaire Developer Conference ran November 5-8 and attracted over
2,700 attendee... (more)
